Herttoniemi Metro Station, Entrance C Platform Level
Helsinki
A small exhibition was on display at Herttoniemi station in June 2025. Karita Rytivaara’s scale model works reflected on the constructivist structure, form, and future of Herttoniemi, while the postcard photographs more broadly depicted original elements of the 1980s metro. The publication brings together parts of the exhibition and texts by various contributors. The magazine and postcards were easy to take along during the exhibition.
“Did you know that the Herttoniemi metro station was featured in the Finnish Architectural Review in 1981? Its architecture was admired at the time – as was the design of the entire Helsinki Metro. This small exhibition pauses to examine
the 1970s and 1980s design of the Helsinki Metro and the value of everyday environments – especially through the example of the Herttoniemi station. The original metro stations in Helsinki – particularly between Rautatientori and Itäkeskus, but also east of Ruoholahti – are currently undergoing renovations and updates. Alongside Herttoniemi, the materiality of other above-ground stations, platforms, and interiors is under threat. Does the
early metro environment of Helsinki contain values worth preserving? Is there hidden beauty in rational architecture, steel, colour, and vanishing infrastructural design? Photographs, scale models, and a publication open a window onto the disappearing environment of the 1980s Helsinki Metro – a part of our everyday life, and our history. The exhibition and research material have been compiled by architect KARITA RYTIVAARA, who is also responsible for the photographs and scale models. The publication includes texts by interior architect JUSSI LAINE, architect and doctoral researcher MERETE KEMPPAINEN, and architect OLLI NIEMINEN. Graphic design by KAARINA TAMMISTO. The project has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.”
